Lionel Messi scored his 600th career goals for both club and country
Lionel Messi has proved yet again that he is arguably the best footballer the world has ever seen.
The Argentina and Barcelona star man, has clinched a landmark achievement yet again as he scored his 600th goal for both club and country.
Messi netted the only goal via a blinding free kick in today's La liga clash against Athletico Madrid to give the home side the win.
Just 26 minutes into the game, a foul was commited by a Athletico Madrid defender, few yards to the box 18 line. Messi stepped up and placed the free kick over the defensive line and out of reach for Jan Oblak to save, which grant the home side a deserve lead.
The visitor however mounted a lot of pressure on the home side as Diego Costa and Griezmann couldn't hit the target against the league leaders.
Griezmann who scored four goals in their last league game last weekend, couldn't replicate that performance as a well organized Barcelona defence saw him out throughout the 90 minutes. See
With this win, Barcelona has extended their lead at the top of the table to 8 points.
Athletico Madrid came into today's game hoping to close the gap on the leaders, but unfortunately for them, Lionel Messi wasn't letting that happen.
Athletico Madrid sits comfortably in the No. 2 spot, followed by arch rivals, Real Madrid who sits temporarily in the No. 3 spot as sevilla lurks behind.
Yesterday it was Ronaldo who reached a land mark of goals for Madrid as he scored his 301 goals for the spanish side.
But today, Messi also scored his 600th goals for both club and country.
With the two superstars scoring goals and breaking records, the debate for who is the best is unending.
Barcelona however, will be without their star midfielder, Andres Iniesta, for about 3-4 weeks, as a strong tackle in today's clash got him injured just 35 minutes of play. He was replaced by Andre Gomes.
The win is a big boost for the team, as they prepare for their second leg clash against chelsea in the Uefa Champions League.
Barcelona who ended the first leg in a 1-1 draw in stamford bridge, will be looking to see out the English side in the return leg at the Camp Nou.
