D'banj blast popular record label owners (Details)
Popular Nigerian musician, Oladapo Oyabanjo, professionally known as D'banj, blast most Nigerian record label owners as ilitrates who knows nothing about music and the industry.
The mega star who was on a panel discussing the topic, 'Changing The Game: Artistes As Leaders' at the ongoing Social Media Week Lagos, said most of the new artiste and record labels in Nigeria were founded by internet fraudsters, popularly known as 'Yahoo'boys.
Talking on the challenges confronting the Music industry, D'banj also added that most Nigerian artistes lack capacity building and proper orientation about the concepts of music.
" A lot of record label these days are founded and owned by Yahoo boys. You must first understand the reason why you want to do music.why do you want to participate in music.You must have an idea and most importantly the talent for it. Nigerian artiste need a lot of capacity building. It is only in Nigeria that the owner of the record label doesn't have an inkling not even an idea about music."
D'banj explained that the reason why he ventured into music was because of the fear of being poor.
Despite throwing shades at some artistes in the industry, the singer also encouraged young and upcoming artistes on building their brand.
According to D'banj, building a brand is not as rosy as you think, it takes hard work and deliberate effort to archieve that aim.
" Just like any marketable product, you must always evolve, you have to be very creative so you won't be left behind. The fear of being poor made me think outside the box. This is one of the factors that
brought me into the industry,"he said.
His fans nick named him "BIG FISH" D'banj said he is ready to swim in the digital ocean where he believes the future lies.
He encouraged business owners and investors to invest in the Nigerian music industry through collaborations and partnership.
D'banj was formally signed to US rapper "Kanye West" record label, and has done music with international stars like Snoop Dogg.
