Talented South African trumpeter Hugh Masekelahas dies at 78

Talented South African trumpeter Hugh Masekelahas is dead, TimesLive reports.

The Minister of Arts and Culture in South Africa Nathi Mthethwa confirmed the news about Masekelahas on his Twitter handle, saying:

A baobab tree has fallen, the nation has lost a one of the most talented musician with the passing onto glory of Jazz legend bra Hugh Masekela. We can say for sure that bra Hugh was one of the great architects of Afro Jazz and he uplifted the soul of our nation through his timeless music.

The Masekela's family revealed that the jazz trumpeter passed away after battling with prostate cancer.

"After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family who was with him all through the time. "

Masekela was was prominent in South Africans fight for apartheid, his hit song way back in 1987 "Bring Him Back Home" was the theme tune for Nelson Mandela's world tour after he was released from prison.

Date and venue for his memorial and burial will be released to the public soon, said the family.
