Real Madrid wins their third UEFA Champions League trophy in a row.
REAL Madrid have won the UEFA Champions League for a record third time in a row. The Los Blancos defeated Liverpool in the final that was played in Kiev on Saturday.
The Spanish giants have won the trophy for the third year in a role. It’s been a long time coming as they defeated city rivals, Athletico Madrid in the 2016, they also defeated Juventus last year and this year they defeated Liverpool to make it three in a row.
The much anticipated showdown took place in Kiev and the expectation was high as it promised to be a show piece. Liverpool haven’t won the trophy since their famous comeback against AC Milan in the year 2005. The reds came from behind as they seal the victory that night. Real Madrid haven’t won a recognized trophy at the end of the season and they were looking to right their wrongs on the final of the UEFA Champions League and secure a silverware for the season.
Liverpool haven’t won any trophy this season, they managed to secure the fourth place position and were also hoping they’ll deliver the trophy to their loyal supporters.
The line up for the Jurgen Klopp’s men witnessed no changes as Firmino, Salah and Sadio Mane led the front line attack for the Red’s. Goalkeeper keeper, Klavan stood in goal for the reds, Van Dirk, Lovren, Alexander Arnold and Robertson were in the back four, James Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum played in the midfield position as Jurgen Klopp played his favorite 4-3-3 formation
.
There was no change in the starting eleven that defeated Juventus last year in the UEFA Champions league final. Zidane decided to stick to his winning eleven last year as they aim for their third in a row.
In the line up for the Spanish giants, Navas, Sergio Ramos, Daniel Carvajal, Varane and Marcelo played the final four. Luca Modric, Casemiro and kroos played in midfield while Ronaldo, Isco and Benzema led the attacking line.
The much anticipated showdown was on the way as the referee blew to a start.
Liverpool played like the more experienced side as they knocked the ball around the field and had stots on target. The Red’s pushed forward through the wings and a shot from Sadio Mane was forced wide by the keeper.
Madrid struggled to find their foot in the game as it was Liverpool who took their Gengenpressing type of attacked to the Madrid box.
Ronaldo struggled to control the ball and make good passes as he was well covered by 18 year old Alexander Arnold.
Liverpool continued their high pressing but Salah couldn’t wrap his foot on the ball to provide a shot at goal as he was been marked by Sergio Ramos whose tackle forced the Liverpool star to land awkwardly with his shoulders on the ground.
Salah indicated that he can’t carry on in the game as it seems to be a dislocated bone in the shoulder. With tears in his eyes and agony in the faces of the fans, their star player was pulled off due to the injury he sustained after that rough and experience tackle by Ramos. He was replaced by Adam Lallana.
After Salah’s injury, Real Madrid took control of the game and started attacking the English side as they knocked the ball around and took a couple of shot before the referee blew for half time.
Both teams head to the dugout as the score was goalless in half time.
The second half began and it was Madrid who continued pressing on. They pressed on and the first goal was scored by Benzema in the 51st minute. The striker bounced on a terrible mistake by Klavan whose wrong pass was capitalized on by Benzema as he watched the ball rolled slowly into the net. Klavan was calling at the referee for an offside but the referee clearly stated that Benzema was not in an offside position.
Liverpool were one goal behind and they were chasing the game as they pressed for an early equalizer. The equalizer came knocking in the 55th minute as Sadio Mane scored as he taps the ball in from a corner kick delivered into the box.
Liverpool's confident was boosted after that equalizer as their dream of lifting the trophy was still in their reach.
Gareth Bale came in for Isco as Madrid continued searching for the goal that will secure their victory. As Gareth Bale came in, the attack became tougher for the Liverpool defense to handle and In the 63rd minute, Gareth Bale scored a beautiful bicycle kick as the Liverpool defense were caught off guard by that blinding shot which made it 2-1.
Liverpool tried to fight back as Sadio Mane's shot hit the bar and other effort by the Red's to make it 2-2 didn't pull through.
Klavan committed another blunder as we approached full time. The keeper turned in a shot by Gareth Bale into his own net and that ended all hopes for Liverpool to get back into the game.
It ended 3-1 in Kiev as Real Madrid secured their third Champions League trophy in a row.
Disaster for Liverpool as their star player injury sold them out and other costly errors from Klavan gave Madrid the edge over them.
